What is Spiritual Direction?

“Spiritual direction” is an ancient practice of meeting on a regular basis with a trusted and trained companion-guide to reflect deeply on your relationship with God. As you consider your relationship with the help of a listener who is also walking this faith journey, you recognize God’s presence and grace in your daily life of ordinary responsibilities.
Spiritual Direction can be an opportunity to experience God’s unconditional love for you – just as you are – wherever you find yourself in your faith walk with God. It can be an avenue of drawing closer to God and responding ever more faithfully to God particularly in difficult times.  Spiritual direction is not necessarily about solving problems – although life issues that challenge us are certainly part of the conversations.  Spiritual direction is best understood as a relationship in which you come to more readily notice God’s presence and discern your response to God’s love.

A few details:
  • Normally meet once a month for one hour
  • Meetings are confidential
  • There is no charge
  • Spiritual Direction is a mutual relationship and if at any time either person does not believe that it is a good fit, it can be discontinued.

Dr. Ben Pickett has served in full-time ministry since 2002. He and his wife, Kerry, have been married 28 years and have two children. He received his certification in Spiritual Direction from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education and his Doctor of Ministry degree from Abilene Christian University. Ben and Kerry live in NW Houston where he serves as Executive Minister for the West Houston Church of Christ.
